Privacy Policy

The short version

WriteOffRoad is operated by John Gribben. Your location data is processed to build your deduction report and is not stored between sessions. We do not sell it, we do not share it with advertisers, and we do not retain it after your session ends. If you come back later, you upload your file again.

What we collect

Location data you upload. When you upload a Google Maps Timeline export, we process it to identify qualifying trips and calculate mileage and per diem amounts. This file is held only for the duration of your session and is not retained afterward.
Your tax home address. You provide this so we can apply the IRS 50-mile rule. It is used for that calculation only.
Account information. If you create an account, we store your email address and authentication details.
Payment information. Payments are processed by Stripe. We never see or store your full card number. Stripe's handling of your payment data is governed by Stripe's Privacy Policy.
Usage analytics. We use Google Analytics to understand how people find and use the site — pages viewed, referral source, approximate region, device type. This is aggregate behavioral data, not your location history. Google's handling is governed by Google's Privacy Policy.
Advertising measurement. If you arrive from an ad, we may record that fact in order to measure which campaigns work. This does not involve your uploaded location data.

What we do not do

We do not sell your personal information.
We do not share your location data with third parties.
We do not use your location history for advertising or profiling.
We do not retain your uploaded Timeline file after your session ends.
We do not file tax returns or transmit anything to the IRS on your behalf.

Cookies

We use cookies necessary for the site to function (keeping you signed in, remembering your session) and analytics cookies as described above. You can block cookies in your browser, though sign-in will not work without the necessary ones.

How long we keep things

Not retained after your session

Uploaded Timeline files and the tax home address you enter.

Retained

Account email and login, until you ask us to delete your account. Payment records, as required for tax and accounting purposes. Analytics data, per Google Analytics default retention.

Your rights

You can ask us to access, correct, or delete the personal information we hold about you. Email contact@writeoffroad.com and we will respond within 30 days.

If you are in California, the CCPA gives you rights to know what we collect, request deletion, and not be discriminated against for exercising those rights. We do not sell personal information, so there is nothing to opt out of on that front.

If you are in the EEA or UK, the GDPR gives you rights of access, rectification, erasure, restriction, portability, and objection. Our lawful basis for processing your uploaded data is performance of a contract — you asked us to calculate your deductions.

Children

WriteOffRoad is not intended for anyone under 18 and we do not knowingly collect information from minors.

Changes

If we change this policy we will update the date at the top. Material changes will be noted on the site.
